I am a textile artist and designer working with natural dyes and resources. My philosophy is to seek out sustainable and planet friendly solutions to design. With a background in education and consultancy I run my own studio/gallery – Botanical Being, where I offer workshops, collaborations and exhibitions focused on natural textile art and design.
Nature is a constant inspiration and using the plants that grow at hands reach, I am able to extract the colours and prints from my locality. Following a deep exploration into natural dyes and botanical prints I have been able to develop a practice that includes the colours I have found on the land from the plants I share my home with. Walking and foraging in nature brings with it a quiet contemplation offering inspiration and insight into the natural world and the magic that lies within the flora.
Understanding the chemistry and the process for extracting the direct prints from the leaves is central to the success of the work.
I am passionate about sharing the work I do, exploring the potential of this design process and seeking new methods of global communication though textile design collaborations. My practice offers a shared focus and experience, that brings the natural world and sustainable ideologies into being through global projects and a deeper connection with hand, land, its history and spirit. With a mindful approach to textile design and an understanding of the healing benefits of the creative process, this work aims to act as a healing experience for artist, participant and audience.
Botanical Signatures is a collection of work that allows the serendipitous design process to flourish through my personal work and through the hosting and curation of a global collaboration. The botanical signatures of my locality and of 103 women in 28 countries.
