The series of film photography I have produced touches on the visuals of the cinematic qualities of the night and the lack of humanity within photography and how it can impact the narrative of an image. From developing of visual research from other practitioner’s works like Todd Hido and Nicholas Windy Refn, we can see how the romantic qualities of the night and the feeling of emptiness go together somewhat ironically. My series of work has pushed my knowledge of film photography and has engaged my research to look upon more technical understanding.
Before the Masters Course in Photography I found myself forever relying on digital means to capture my work, with no particular care or attention to what I was photographing. For me, the excitement of photography had disappeared, and I lost the sense of satisfaction of obtaining an image, because of the lack of technical skill.
I decided to push myself into a completely different direction and undertake a traditional photographic method of film photography. I chose to do this within the Masters Course to reengage my practice with more traditional photographic values and intense technical elements that surround film photography.
