The work I have chosen for this exhibition is a selection of collaborative audiovisual pieces, generated by VJ Marian Saunders and myself. Our approaches are different enough to generate playful tensions and creative difficulties inherent to the production of these pieces. We have both worked instinctively, without plans. This has been surprising, and lots of fun too. Colour, composition, texture and beat are our primary materials. Marian’s visuals are created using multiple photographic sources (sometimes her films, sometimes my paintings) and recorded in real time, and my soundpieces are made using both traditional musical instruments and found sounds. Either of us may provide vision or sound that starts the cyclical making process.
The pieces develop as we react and respond to each others’ production, keeping the work alive and changing, through what are loose rhythmic sequences of developments. Sound responding to image responding to sound responding to image, where meaning always seems to be on its way, but never quite arrives.
