The project focuses on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) specifically the effect of PTSD in war veterans. Researching into the impact of PTSD on an individual’s mental state and resulting effects of the mental trauma. Exploring the resulting use of alcohol or other substances as a forum of self-medicating to supress PTSD symptoms, causing a positive association with alcohol leading to an alcohol use disorder (AUD). The project is aimed to highlight the effects and dangers of PTSD as the risk for suicidal ideation is 5.7 times greater in veterans that suffer from both PTSD and AUD. Using virtual reality to place the users into the literal mind of a veteran suffering from PTSD, to experience its symptoms, triggers, struggles and effects of the mental trauma it has on the individual first hand. The inspiration and drive behind this project is my great grandfather’s personal experience suffering with the condition, after his time as a prisoner of war (POW) for over three and a half years. It is informed by research to create and present a realistic yet personal experience of the condition, as PTSD and its effects manifest themselves differently for each individual. The project uses interaction with modern technology to raise awareness for an age-old condition.
