In keeping to the principles of the Manifesto for Agile Software Development while avoiding the pitfalls and short comings of some modern implementations of ‘Agile’, I have endeavoured to embolden my skillset as a 3D artist, concreting my skillset for the rapidly evolving games industry. Through the undertaking of a character design project, I have developed a line of thinking that has taken me away from the character in the start, first construct a fantastical world for which this character might reside.
Drawing on the ideas and symbols behind conservationism and naturalism I have taken my work into Norse mythology, and studied how Yggdrasil, the World Tree might play a key contributing factor in the development of the world in which my character resides. And through a narrative driven approach, arrived at a character that captures the spirit of her community, the world she lives in and her role within that world, combining reference materials such as modern tribal communities as well as Mayan and Aztec influences, while also anthropomorphically communicating personality in my design in line with the pseudo-stylised house style of the studio this design is intended.
With the ambition of better understanding the entire games work flow for characters, I am implementing this character design, with animations into a viewing application of my own construction with Unreal Engine 4.
