My current research concerns UI/UX and hybridised digital design practices. I am interested in nature, particularly design associated with natural proportions and ratios. Consequently, for my Masters project, I decided to combine these two areas of interest. In doing so, my visual research has focussed on the Golden Ratio. The Golden Ratio is a mathematical formula that has informed the work of many designers and artists, including that of architect Le Corbusier and surrealist artist Salvador Dali. The Golden Ratio is commonly found in nature, and when used in design, it can foster organic and natural looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the viewer’s eye. My investigations into working with the Golden Ratio have taken the form of posters, a book, a custom typeface as well as numerous UI/UX design experiments. I believe that this approach is useful with regard to contemporary communication design practice because mathematical formulas found in nature can be both flexible and beautiful when applied across numerous media platforms.
